Detaliile poveștii de dragoste necunoscute până acum publicului sunt redate, în splendidă manieră stilistică, într-o lucrare monumentală a autoarei, intitulată "Singularitate și reconstrucție imaginară. Pictori români în Bretania (1876-1940)". Un tratat despre artiștii români care au "evadat" în Bretania, un subiect abordat în premieră de criticul de artă, care a lucrat timp de cinci ani la acest ambițios proiect. Cartea, apărută la editura Arcade, a fost lansată pe 23 noiembrie la sediul Fundației Culturale "ArtSociety" din București.
Pe la sfârșitul sec. 19, devenise o modă ca pictorii să meargă în Bretania, tonul în acest sens fiind dat de Paul Gauguin. El a refuzat să mai lucreze la Paris și s-a îndreptat către un loc exotic, Bretania, pe urmele sale mergând și Grigorescu, Pallady sau Gheorghe Petrașcu.
Și cum o lucrare de asemenea factură merita o lansare în ton cu importanța sa, invitat pentru a o prezenta a fost Andrei Pleșu, care, cu farmecul specific, a povestit, în prezența a numeroși și importanți intelectuali, începuturile relației cu fosta sa colegă de facultate, dr. Doina Păuleanu: "Am intrat amândoi la Istoria Artei în singurul an din istoria Academiei de Arte Frumoase când s-a intrat fără examen de admitere. În anul acela terminase liceul și Zoia Ceaușescu, și pentru ea ieșise ordin ca cei care au luat 10 la bacalaureat să poată intra fără examen unde vor ei. Am fost amândoi în situația teribilă de a fi premianți în ultimii ani de liceu și de bac, și ne-am trezit intrați fără examen la o facultate în care se intră foarte greu. Debutul nostru a arătat mai curând stânjenitor, întrucât primul lucru pe care ni l-a spus unul dintre marii noștri profesori când a intrat în clasă a fost: «Ăia care au intrat fără examen să se ridice în picioare». Noi am crezut că e de bine, ne-am ridicat destul de fudul. El s-a uitat la noi cu o privire semnificativă și a spus: «Stați jos…». Acesta a fost debutul nostru în meserie. Diferența dintre Doina și mine este că ea a perseverat, în vreme ce mie mi-a alunecat piciorul în tot felul de alte direcții".
Culorile dragostei
Una dintre cele patru surori Pester Wirth din Iași, Carlotta Leria a trăit între anii 1857-1924, fiind soprană, apoi profesor de canto; celebrul pictor român a cunoscut-o pe artistă în Italia, în anii 1873 - 1874, zugrăvind-o în pasteluri, peisaje marine și portrete în ulei. În vara anului 1881, prima donna a Operei Italiene din București susține un concert la Cazinoul constănțean, așa cum arată ziarul "Farul Constanței", citat de dr. Păuleanu: "Domnișoara Leria posedă o voce dulce, simpatică, care vorbeșce inimei" (p. 59).
În 1895, Carlotta este căsătorită cu inginerul Dumitru Zossima, care avea o moșie întinsă pe malul lacului Siutghiol, unde veneau în vizită familiile Delavrancea și Vlahuță. Atunci când Grigorescu vine, pentru prima dată, în casa Delavrancea, în 1897, Cella Delavrancea, pe atunci în vârstă de 10 ani, constantă că pictorul, "atât de muzical în colorit, nu suporta muzica" (Cella Delavrancea, "Dintr-un secol de viață", citată de dr. Doina Păuleanu, p. 60). "Să fie, oare, o reacție la despărțirea de Carlotta Leria, alături de care Grigorescu își va fi făcut, desigur, o solidă cultură muzicală?!", se întreabă autoarea.
Mariajul dintre Carlotta și Dumitru Zossima nu rezistă. Cu nostalgia amintirilor care o legau de Grigorescu, artista își construiește o casă în cartierul Viilor din Constanța, acolo unde pictorul o portretizase pe când avea 24 de ani.
