Romania's leu sinks to 3.5829 versus the euro in the second part of the day following regional trend

Romania's national currency, the leu, dropped to 3.5829 against the single European currency in the second part of the day, on high demand for foreign currencies, dealers said.

The leu dipped from 3.5667 to 3.6070 versus the euro this morning. Banks bought the euro with 3.6030 lei and sold it for 3.6070 lei at 2:30 p.m.

The reference exchange rate posted today by Romania's Central Bank (BNR) shows a 0.9 percent drop of the leu against the euro and a 0.27 percent drop against the U.S. dollar.

On international markets, the U.S. dollar lowered from 1.5765 to 1.5824 versus the euro. At 2:30 p.m. Romania's hour, the euro was traded for 1.5799 U.S. dollars.

Interbank interests for overnight deposits stood close to the monetary policy rate set by the central bank at 10 percent per year.
